Is telling my story a good idea?

Is telling my story a good idea?

Q. Why would I want to tell my story?
There are many good reasons for sharing your experiences with others in the form of a feature in a newspaper or magazine, or even on TV or radio.

You may have been a victim of crime or want to share your health or relationship experiences. You may even have a story about a relative or friend that you'd like to tell.

You could have an important message to communicate, or perhaps you want to raise awareness of a charity or a good cause. It could be that telling your story will inspire others – or maybe bring them a smile in these turbulent times.

And of course, you might want to generate funds for yourself or your chosen charity.

But whatever the reasons for talking to the media, you are likely to have reservations.

Q. How can I be sure the journalist will tell my story accurately? Can I approve it before it goes to press?
At Medavia, we are all former top-level journalists who now operate as consultants. This means that we won’t attempt to persuade you to tell your story. Instead, we will consider your specific case and highlight to you the benefits and pitfalls of communicating your story. The decision to proceed is yours. One of our own writers will interview you for your feature, market it, negotiate fees on your behalf and handle all legal contracts.

If you decide to proceed, we will work with you in partnership through every stage. We will ensure you are happy with the article prior to publication.

Q. How will I know my story is going to the most appropriate publication?
We can advise you on this based on our in-depth industry knowledge and experience.

Q. How do I know the fee is a fair one or that I wouldn’t earn more elsewhere?
We will negotiate this on your behalf in order to secure the highest possible fee. Sometimes, it is possible to syndicate your feature further – perhaps to television networks or to markets abroad. In this case, if you agree, we will negotiate further fees.

Q. What are the legal implications of telling my story? For example, do I need to sign a contract?

We will guide you through any legal contracts. Normally, these are very simple, standard documents.
